Stop relying on willpower
Sent to subscribers July 26, 2026
You don't need more discipline. You need less friction.
By the end of a caregiving day, willpower is gone. Spent. That's when you reach for whatever's easiest — the scroll, the skipped meal, the hour you meant to rest and didn't. Then you blame yourself for being weak. You're not weak. You're tired, and tired people do whatever is closest to hand.
So stop fighting yourself and move the things instead. The trick is twenty seconds: make the good thing twenty seconds easier to start, and the hard thing twenty seconds harder. Lay the walking shoes by the door tonight. Fill the water glass before bed. Put the phone in the other room so reaching for it takes real effort. You're not summoning willpower you don't have. You're making the better choice the lazy one.
Pick one good thing you keep meaning to do and can't seem to. Tonight, remove one step between you and it. Just one. Shoes by the door. Tea bag already in the cup. Make tomorrow's good choice the easy one to fall into.
Design beats discipline, every single time. Write back and tell me the one step you removed tonight — I collect these. Back next week.
