The Quiet Carry

Issue 1 · The Happiness Advantage

You're waiting for the wrong thing

Sent to subscribers June 28, 2026

You keep telling yourself you'll feel like yourself again when things settle down. When the hard stretch passes. When they're stable. When you finally get a full night's sleep. You've turned feeling okay into a prize you have to earn — something waiting at a finish line you can't quite see.

Here's what I've learned, from the chair beside the bed and the nursing-home floor where I work now: it runs the other way.

A mind that feels even a little okay does the hard things better. More patience. Steadier hands. You catch the small change you'd have missed. The okay isn't the reward for getting through — it's the fuel that gets you through.

So don't wait for the day to be good before you let yourself feel good. Take one good minute first, and let it carry the rest.

Tonight, before the next hard thing on your list — the meds, the call, the lifting — stop for one minute. A warm drink held in both hands. One step out the back door. One song, all the way through. Not a reward. Fuel.

It will feel too small to matter. It isn't.

Take the minute. I'll be back next week.
